Cantona cash withdrawal protest irks EU finance leaders

"A call by French ex-footballer Eric Cantona for people to punish banks by withdrawing all their cash has been condemned by EU ministers."

I suspect that most people are concentrating more on the arrest of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange but the issue of the banks and how they control our lives is one which needs to be kept firmly in focus.

I have always liked and admired Eric Cantona. As a footballer, he was one of the best players to watch. How he played his football is how he is living his life - with passion and full commitment. Cantona is absolutely right, you try and go to your bank and take out all of your money and see what happens. I bet you will come up against a wall of resistance and pressure to leave it there.

In reality, your money is not your money when it is in a bank, it belongs to the bank and they will not let that money go easily. At one time, banks were there to keep your money safe and help you with loans and mortgages. All that has changed. Now banks decide when you can get your money and how. They invest your money without your consent or knowledge in companies and investments that you may not be comfortable or happy about.

But they never tell you this. As far as you are concerned, you and your money are just a number on a database and as long as they can make money out of your money and give you nothing in return, then you will be just fine. But as soon as you exercise your rights to move your money where you like, you become a problem - just like Eric Cantona.

Well I hope the EU finance ministers are feeling pissed and angry. It is they along with the banks, that have created this situation in the world where countries are having to borrow money in order to survive. Guess who is loaning the money at an inflated interest rate? Yes, you guessed it - the banks! Those same banks that have just received a massive bail out from us, the poor taxpayer. Those same banks who got in to massive debt by being greedy and massively irresponsible!

Applaud Eric Cantona and others like him. Cantona is making people sit up and take notice of this issue. You cannot trust the banks - ever! Go and get your money out and let me know what happens. While you are there, sing the football chant:

"Ooh Aah, Cantona!"
